Science Says Boating Is Good For Your Health

You've likely heard of "green space"– areas in cities or residences that are full of plants that bring us a little closer to nature. Author and marine biologist Dr. Wallace Nichols uses a new phrase – "blue space"– those of us familiar with water understand.

Lakes, rivers, oceans, bays, even creeks and swimming pools are all blue space. Dr. Nichols, author of Blue Mind, a New York Times best seller, has been researching how blue spaces affect us. He calls it "the blue mind."

The blue mind, he says, separates us from the pressures and distractions of life, which he refers to as "the red mind." Having a blue mind lessens the stresses of the day and gives us a break from our overstimulated lives. Nichols says that the relationship of a boat to our mental health has been largely overlooked, until recently...

We know boating is fun and we take away a lot of good things after a day on the water but what does the science say?

Nichols: We know from studies that water positively affects us auditorily, visually, and somatically. Neuroscientists can now pinpoint in your brain where emotions manifest– it's called amygdala. They've found that even just looking at water can trigger feelings of wellness, compassion, empathy, and happiness. We experience slower breathing, reduced heart rate, and even lower skin temperature.

Blue mind takes us from our prefrontal cortex, responsible for things like planning and decision-making, to our default mode network– which is where we're thinking about others or ourselves and not specific tasks. Studies show that being on or near water, even just hearing it, adds wellness and emotional benefits. People say they feel better and their vital signs agree.

Why do we feel good when we we're on the water?

Nichols: When stress overload and attention fatigue are sustained over long periods of time, the "always-on" lifestyle can eventually result in memory problems, poor judgement, anxiety attacks, nervous habits, and even depression. Chronic stress damages the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. It lowers the levels of dopamine and serotonin– the body's natural "happy chemicals". All this causes us to feel exhausted and depressed.

Time on the water lets us unplug: there is less noise, fewer voices, and less stimulation. We get back our brain bandwidth that we can use for other things. Water takes aways distractions, much like meditation, it helps clear the mind– this is what blue mind is.

What happens to our body when we are on a boat?

Nichols: Our heart rates and breathing slow, people feel better and stress decreases. The sound of the water increases blood flow to the brain, inducing relaxation and a flood of neurochemicals that promote wellness. We all really do feel better when we are on the water. A boat is in fact medicine in our lives.

Floats will begin at Downtown Destin Shopping Center (Old Time Pottery) and travel west down Harbor Blvd. (Hwy 98) to Stahlman Avenue. Spectators should stand on the north side of Harbor Blvd. to watch the parade.

Republicans say the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a massive tax cut that will spur investment, jobs, and economic growth. But Democrats counter that the bill is a brazen effort to loot the American government, with an eye toward unraveling social safety programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

But having passed the House and Senate, the bill is now a President Trump signature away from becoming the law of the land, so what does it mean for you, the taxpayer?

In the past, tax reform efforts have tried to simplify the tax code and remove special-interest deductions that have become entrenched since the United States ratified the income tax in 1913. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act makes no attempt to simplify the code; if anything, it does the opposite, introducing new loopholes while making only a minor effort to reel in special interests.

The bill’s primary function is a massive corporate tax cut, dropping the rate from 35 percent to 21 percent. Individuals will get an across-the-board cut as well, albeit small, but in an attempt to offset some of the $1.5 trillion cost, the individual cuts expire after 2025.

How does this impact you? We’ll walk you through the basics:

Individual rates fall, standard deduction doubles

The good news is that in 2018, you’re probably getting a tax cut. The individual rates fall across the board. The new law not only lowers rates across all seven tax brackets, but lowers the threshold for each bracket. This applies to taxpayers who file jointly as well.

The new law also doubles the standard deduction to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for joint filers. For taxpayers with few itemized deductions, this means taking the standard deduction will exempt twice as much of your income from federal taxation. For those who currently itemize, it may now make sense to simply take the standard deduction, and thus have less income subject to federal taxation as well.

But the benefits to the poor and middle class are temporary

While the corporate tax cut is permanent, the majority of the individual cuts expire on December 31, 2025, setting up yet another potential “fiscal cliff.” Republicans have said they intend and expect to extend these tax breaks when the time comes.

But under the law as it stands, they expire, and that’s led a number of nonpartisan analyses to conclude that while the poor and middle class get a tax cut in the short-term, most of the long-term benefit is to the rich.

While supporters of the bill say the corporate tax cut will lead to more investment, more jobs, and higher wages, there will undoubtedly be a windfall to corporate shareholders as companies kick their tax cuts back to investors in the form of dividends. But as only 45 percent of Americans own stock, and only 14 percent own stocks outside of a 401(k), this benefits mostly the rich.
